Description:
Gunpowder (Organic) Tea. Organic, special grade Chinese green tea tightly rolled into pellets. USDA organic. Don't be fooled by its small size when using this tea. It expands many times over. A small amount goes a long ways.

Legend has it that the name Gunpowder was given by an young English clerk who thought the tiny rolled green balls looked like gunpowder. The tea leaves are specially selected for quality, size and style. They are then rolled into tight nuggets. Gunpowder tea keeps a lot longer than other green teas and is favored because of this characteristic.

Gunpowder tea comes from the province of Zhejiang in China and from Taiwan. Generally the better gunpowders come from Taiwan. Interestingly Taiwan’s gunpowder quality improved after 1949. Another interesting point; before the 1900’s, gunpowder tea comprised about 60% of Americas total tea imports compared to today, when it is less than 1 percent.

When the tea is made the tiny pellets jingle and tinkle in the bowl or cup . Boiling water causes them to open up like flowers and sink slowly to the bottom in graceful patterns which add a dimension of visual pleasure to tea drinking. Gunpowder is more dense than other teas so one or two teaspoons for a teapot is all that is required.

Use 1/2 teaspoon per 6 oz cup. Heat water until steaming. Steep for 2-3 minutes.

"Smoky flavor, didn't do it for me. I'll stick to clear tasting teas."

***** My favorite 02/06/2008 16:27
"Of all the green teas I buy I think this one is my favorite. Good for at least 3 infusions.. and the 2nd one is the best, after the leaves have unfurled. Just wonderful."

***** I love this tea so much 01/06/2008 16:52
"I originally bought this tea because of it's cheap price, and because I had been wanting to try gunpowder green tea for some time now. I was amazed when I tried it. The aroma of it was very smoky, but in a good way. And a little sure goes a long way. I was able to infuse this about 3 times I think, and it has a very nice flavor that makes this good for just a drinking tea. Highly recommended...in fact, this may be my favorite green tea I've tried."

***** Could not believe the expansion of the bullets. 10/23/2007 20:59
"The taste was astounding and rich for green tea, and the volumetric expansion of the dried to which filled the infuser explained the robust flavor!"

***** good if rinsed first 09/05/2007 22:58
"This tea is good however I found that a 15 sec rinse in steaming water helps eliminate any bitterness and keeps it smooth
I have been using steaming water before the boil and leave it 3 min. 2nd infusion did not work well with this tea

"Not a favorite of mine, although I think for the price and the amount this is a great bargain. A little too strong of a green tea flavor for my taste. "

***** Too Green? 07/11/2007 05:23
"Green tea has never been my first choice, but I was hoping the rave reviews would force me to change! I think it was a little too strong of a green for my personal taste, although I do think the ability to use less to brew makes this a great bargain for those who enjoy it. "

***** This my main Tea 06/20/2007 12:39
"I love this stuff, some may find it a little too robust for a green tea. But to me the sun doesn't shine if I don't have some Gunpowder green tea during my day."

***** Great with Mint 07/17/2006 06:27
"This is a great price and it really does multiply in size once you put it in water. The tea is great with fresh mint and a bit of sweetener. I had some tea at a Moroccan restaurant that they called Moroccan tea. I found out it was just gunpowder and mint, and I had to buy the gunpowder! I think i will try the moroccan mint tea next.

"great tea for the money. It has full green tea flavor, but dont oversteep. I gets alittle bitter if you leave it steeping too long. I heard you have to drink several cups a day to obtain full health benefits from green tea and the great price allows me to do that."

"This is great everyday green tea for the price--especially being organic. Since the tea is rolled tightly, it tends to stay on the bottom (less hassle when using a gaiwan or just a tea cup)."

"excellent tea for the price. You can drink as much as you want and not break the bank. I like to steep the tea for little longer. It will have slightly more bitter taste but I like my tea little stronger. Overall I highly recommend this tea."

"I bought a quarter pound of the gunpowder green tea. When I first opened it up it didn't seem like much was in there. I decided I was going to make a cup of tea so I read the instructions and put a half teaspoon full into a wire ball infuser and put it into the steaming water (not boiling). I let it steep for two minutes and then I took out the ball and opened it and the leaves expanded to roughly three times there size. The taste of the tea is very slight, it taste almost like celestial seasons white tea in a tea bag, but has a slight grassy taste. The color was a very light yellow/slight green and the scent is somewhat sweet. I think this tea is a very good deal, it is cheap and it tastes pretty good, and is a heck of a lot better than bagged green tea. "
